Watering
For established plantings, deep infrequent watering is best. An inch of water per week (including rain and irrigation) should be sufficient. It is best to water in the morning, but late afternoon or early evening is alright if necessary.
Soaker hoses are efficient devices for watering. They allow water to gently irrigate plantings over the entire length of the hose. The leaves of plants are never wet, reducing the possibility of disease. The water goes right to the root system and very little is lost to evaporation. Soaker hoses must be left on for a length of time to water deeply. A timer can be helpful in making your job easier.
Plants that have recently been planted should be watered frequently. For the first month watering thoroughly 2 or 3 times a week is best. For newly seeded lawns, water once a day for at least two weeks, until the seedlings are established. It is best to keep activity limited on newly seeded or sodded areas.

Fertilizer
The best fertilizers for turf grass come premixed with a broadleaf herbicide that kills weeds and crabgrass in the lawn. It is best to fertilize the lawn at least twice a year, once in spring and again in early fall. If you want your lawn to look its best you may need to apply 4 or more times a year. Consistent applications will help keep your lawn weed free.
Mulch
The benefits of mulch are numerous. It keeps your planting beds looking attractive, helps retain moisture, keeps the weeds down, and can help improve the soil quality as it breaks down. It should be applied once a year in the spring. It is a good idea to edge the beds before mulch is applied.
